Claw pinch, finger tip.<br\/>They touch the floor and meet it, land where they are and no<br\/>more. &#8230;<br\/>Outwardly, they are flexed\u2014flex for you\u2014<br\/>flex for themselves\u2014themselves\u2014flex in a mirror.<br\/>But, do not forget that they quiet their loudest face, are muffling something&#8230;<br\/>Poised on surfaces they are invertebrate\u2014rest like Lygia Clark\u2019s<br\/>Soft, these unclassified beetles alight against an edge.<br\/>Others hover,<br\/>just graze the floor, then mutely<br\/>set down.<br\/>\u2026<br\/>Over here\u2014the satisfyingly grubby quality of a thing overhandled,<br\/>a piece paper in your pocket<br\/>touched too much.<br\/>We speak about the difficulty of making+<br\/>I learn early on that you glean jeans.<br\/>To glean is to take what otherwise would go to further waste.<br\/>We wear denim and we wear denim down and it wears at us,<br\/>too\u2014imprints at hips,<br\/>maybe.<br\/>Seams in the fabric where it\u2019s doubled or tripled over<br\/>emboss our flesh surface, cause us<br\/>polished by contact.<br\/>Cause us sanded down.<br\/>Under your gleaning hand, they begin a different life.<br\/>Glean the denim and turn it to pulp,<br\/>make it object again, a slow untying by hand&#8230;sifted through and sorted for<br\/>parts, pulped over hours in the pulper. You show me videos.<br\/>To glean can also be immaterial, as in to glean information.<br\/>Take the thing down to this fine gunk,<br\/>build it to new form +in doing so,<br\/>try to get something from it<br\/>and also to give something<br\/>to it\u2014a double bind,<br\/>for form does not necessarily achieve closure,<br\/>nor does raw materiality provide openness (Lyn Hejinian).<br\/>To have made something new does not necessarily answer a question.<br\/>\u2026<\/p>\n\n<p>Sitting on the studio floor, or outside in the rough grass,<br\/>we are trying to name our knots.<br\/>To name them so<br\/>that we may begin to know them<br\/>\u2014and this does not mean we try to plot their undoing.<br\/>Moments or phrases of action punctuated by large periods of pause. Here,<br\/>both such units\/qualities of time, are evidenced. And,<br\/>might such pause be pause that we won\u2019t try<br\/>and untie?<br\/>That we will leave as is?<br\/>+are these pauses<br\/>pauses<br\/>that are lumps in the<br\/>throat +that will stay that way?<br\/>You want to make your knots into knots and then leave them there, on the table, on the floor,<br\/>in the doorway. You realise that you, having unknotted one urge, are not left with<br\/>a clarified surface at all.<br\/>Again: to have made something new does not necessarily answer a question.<br\/>You say: different containers (rooms) bear different gestures.<br\/>Knots and zips are this, too. Are rooms to contain<br\/>different ways of acting.<br\/>We know a knot, at minimum, has been knotted and might be<br\/>undone.<br\/>A zip, instead, holds power both in the closing and the<br\/>opening +each gesture,<br\/>each act of zipping up or down<br\/>is<br\/>architectural space change.<br\/>Where knots are fibres bound in sympathy (Tim Ingold),<br\/>they also speak what we have trouble undoing.<br\/>A zip is none of this, is<br\/>\u2014free planar passage open to closed to open again\u2014<br\/>a lateral, simple potency.<br\/>When freed of fabric around it, it loses some (not all) of this potency.<br\/>It can shift about more, though it still fixes to its point when worn by a body.<br\/>A zip is demonstrative,<br\/>is potential<br\/>is a moving knuckle<br\/>pointing up or down.<br\/>We pause at the crotch.<br\/>We always do.<br\/>The dictionary says a crotch is the \u2018fork\u2019 or bifurcation of the human body<br\/>body where the legs join the trunk. It is the point where we (might) split<br\/>in two.<br\/>\u2026<br\/>We are compassed to know where zips might go.<br\/>I like how you say How immediate it is to unzip and take off your pants.<br\/>How fast the buttons open. Yes. And, style, these known grammars, gives us such<br\/>navigational tools (Rosi Braidotti). Your chamfer in the doorway, soft silent guide,<br\/>mutters<br\/>look that way. Such navigable tools, though, might lead us<br\/>to un-compassing, to de-compassing.
