A little more than a decade ago, Madrid’s artists began to seek cheaper studios in the neighbourhood of Carabanchel. Sol Abaurrea and Ana Coronel de Palma launched farmhouse gallery Belmonte here in 2022. “Until the 1990s, Carabanchel felt like the countryside in relation to central Madrid,” says Coronel de Palma. The team keep Belmonte’s gate open so that the community can engage with the space and its events, which include concerts and performances.
The Spanish capital has always been an appealing springtime destination thanks to its bustling terraces and kinetic nightlife. But in recent years an increasing number of creatives have been transforming the city with their artistic flair.
