Andrés has embarked on a research project through which he aims to continue his exploration of spirit and landscape, understanding the island as a psychological and emotional catalyst, in contrast to the latent anxiety and aggressiveness of the great cosmopolises.
Ses12naus works to support contemporary art and encourage creative experimentation. Established with the mission of providing a nurturing environment for artists to develop their practices in dialogue with the unique context of Ibiza, the foundation seeks to enrich the island’s cultural scene.
Andrés Izquierdo’s first residency at Ses12naus marked a turning point in his relationship with Ibiza. The artist researched and interacted with sacred geological formations, communities, rites, symbolism, myths and everything that has made this island a place of pilgrimage, catharsis and psychological growth.
For his second stay on the island, the artist has embarked on a research project through which he aims to continue his exploration of spirit and landscape, understanding the island as a psychological and emotional catalyst, in contrast to the latent anxiety and aggressiveness of the great cosmopolises.
OPEN STUDIO
Andrés Izquierdo presented at La Carpintería the outcome of his second residency on the island, a new sculptural ensemble produced mainly in earthy and clay compounds, using this materiality to speak of the substrate as a place of transit and as a generator of life of a cyclical nature.
The sculptures produced by Izquierdo relate to walls and plinths in the same way that organisms relate to the substrate: emerging from it or being expelled to the surface. Alluding to the earth as an entity that first spits us out and then swallows us, Izquierdo works with shells, flowers or archaeological artefacts such as the two reproductions of Punic coins acquired at the shop of the Puig des Molins Museum.
This body of work shows us a space of transformation and transit: a wall that wants to be a moon, the metamorphosis of a person into a snail, the passage from day to night or the hybrid nature of Icarus. This portrait of what transforms embodies the intention to instil an energy or potentiality into the sculptures.
In addition to using lyricism as a strategy to imbue objects with energy, Izquierdo employs attributes relating to the infinite and to expansion, present in figures such as the spiral and the vortex, or in the starry space we find depicted on the inner surface of the eye, on the disc of the withered daisy or on the very body of Icarus.
