Martin Llavaneras and Elena Matamoroare the resident artists in this programme promoted by the Centro de Arte Fundación María José Jove (FMJJ) and Acción Cultural Española (AC/E). The main objectives of this artist residency are tofacilitate cultural exchange between Spain and Latin America, as well as to generate collaborative networks that strengthen the cultural interrelation between both countries.

The residency period lasts six weeks, from November to December 2024, and takes place at Casa Mucha Guadalajara. Each selected applicant receives a grant of 1,500 euros for living expenses, 1,500 euros for project production costs, travel (Spain-Mexico-Spain), travel health insurance, accommodation and workspace, support and mentoring throughout the project, and promotion of the project and a public presentation.

Martin Llavaneras (El Segrià, 1983) lives and works in Barcelona. He studied Fine Arts at the UPV (Bilbao, Spain), HTW (Berlin, Germany) and UB (Barcelona, Spain). He works mainly in the field of sculpture, often in relation to the natural and industrial transformation processes of inorganic, biological and linguistic materials. The artist studies these cycles and intervenes in them to modify their dynamics and take part in the management, arrangement and shaping of these materials.

He researches infrastructures such as canals, irrigation ditches and cisterns that support agricultural and livestock production, and how these structures for distributing liquids and materials can be integrated into sculpture. He studies how solid materials such as wheat, maize and barley are moved and transformed into organic resins (starch) for the creation of sculptures. Ideas such as storage, circulation and oxidation, among others, are present in his work.

Elena Matamoro (Vigo, 1999) is an artist whose work establishes the relationship between art, gender and nature, with a focus on sound creation and performance. Matamoro (Vigo, 1999) lives and works between Vigo and Basel. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Vigo (2015-2019) and completed a master’s in Art, Gender and Nature at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst (HGK), Basel, Switzerland (2021-2023).

Her project stems from a reflection on how human and natural spaces coexist, and how this dialogue can be reinterpreted through installation, sound and performance. The proposal connects with the landscape of Guadalajara, where she seeks to translate the structure of its streets into a sound and visual composition. The proposal will draw on observation of the surroundings and a reinterpretation of the region’s traditional ceramics, creating a three-dimensional score that makes it possible to “play” the city through sculptural and sound forms.

The open call was aimed at creators of Spanish nationality engaged in contemporary artistic practices in any discipline.
