Fabrics and papers with a past brought back to life as ornamental elements. Pulp kneaded and dyed in bold colours. Young hands working together to draw new forms out of old waste materials… This is what the renowned artist Lucía Bayón proposes to the students of Norte Joven in the workshop she has been leading since November 2024, with the aim of fostering their expressiveness and creativity as part of the ‘Horizontes de Aprendizaje’ (Learning Horizons) project.
Lucía Bayón is the fourth artist to join the “Horizontes de Aprendizaje” (Learning Horizons) project, an initiative by Norte Joven which, with the support of the Fundación Nemesio Diez, seeks to bring creativity into the professional and personal training of the organisation’s students. In previous editions, the project featured the collaboration of Iván Argote, Cristina Lucas and Diego Delas, who, together with the students, created works and installations that have become part of Norte Joven’s centres in Fuencarral, Villa de Vallecas and Alcobendas.
Lucía Bayón’s creative proposal, which opens the 2024-25 ‘Horizontes de Aprendizaje’ workshops at Norte Joven, delves into the core themes of her own work: textiles subjected to processes of disassembly and subsequent reuse, the creation of circuits in which transformation and reinvention intertwine, and what emerges from these materials and processes.
Since her workshop began in early November, the successive sessions with Norte Joven students have charted the course from waste material to work of art. They have turned old papers and textiles into pulp –the raw material for the artwork–, treated it with starch to give it consistency and hardness, dyed the mass and worked it with their hands to incorporate it –with a metal mesh structure– into the moulds, presses and frames that the artist conceived for the project.
Finally, they have patiently left the pieces to dry until they reach their final destination: becoming ornamental elements at Norte Joven’s Training Centre in Fuencarral. The various decorative pieces –columns, vessels, hanging objects– created by the artist Lucía Bayón together with the Norte Joven students will be incorporated into the Association’s premises.
In this way, the ‘Horizontes de Aprendizaje’ collection will be enriched with a new artwork born from the collaboration between prestigious artists distinguished by their social commitment and young people at risk of vulnerability who are exploring new avenues of expression as part of their intellectual and personal development.
The piece created by the Norte Joven students together with Lucía Bayón will join the artworks produced in previous workshops: the cement and wood benches designed by the Colombian artist Iván Argote –installed in the lobby of Norte Joven Fuencarral–; the decorated bamboo curtain, conceived by the artist Cristina Lucas, which unfolds in the restaurant of Norte Joven Villa de Vallecas; and the murals surrounding the sports courts of Norte Joven Alcobendas and Vallecas, painted by the students under the direction of the artist Diego Delas.
